The Death of Vinyl?

Vinyl was a major breakthrough for music. Finally, people could own records and play them in their own homes. Of course nowadays this concept is so integral to our society the idea of it not being possible seems archaic, but does the vinyl  still hold importance today?

Will there be a day when it's lost forever? Will CDs follow suit?

It's not common, but there are DJs who still insist on using vinyl. Whether it's the feel, sound quality, or just appearance of using vinyl, it still finds it's way into clubs.

Yet using vinyl can be unreliable. The vinyl players themselves need constant maintenance, not to mention the decreasing availbility of support making them more difficult to fix unless you know what you're doing. Add to that the fact that it's hard to get scratches out of the vinyl and often difficult to replace, as well as the the biggest problem of all for a vinyl DJ is having to lug around all those vinyls with you.

So as a result vinyl is much less common, yet the larger record companies still will offer a vinyl option for their records, even if it's a limited supply.

I think the astehtic appearance of someone DJing using vinyl will keep vinyl alive for some time to come, but I do think the day when it dies out is sooner rather than later.

But at the same time as vinyl dies out, eventually so will CDs, as will mp3s, as will whatever comes next. Everything dies out eventually in technology, it's the way it goes.

It won't be gone forever though. LIke people who insist on playing Space Invaders on the atari, you will still get hardcore fans keeping the flame alight.

Long live vinyl, you've served the industry well.
